anti-theft problem!

anti-theft problem!
I own a 2002 F-150 scab Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4 liter engine. Recently it did not want to fire up. It would turn over but it would not fire. I decided that it was the fuel pump and replaced it with all necessary hardware(fuel filter, strainer, etc.) When I tried it after that it still did not fire up. I checked out this site and found out that it might be PATS related. When I turn the key to the "On" position the Theft light jusst blinks and blinks. I decide to call a local Ford dealership and garage and expained to them my situation. They asked me if I had one or two keys. I told them I only had one key and they said that I would need another key cut and programed. I aked them if this would make my truck fire up they said yes but could not expain why or what happened to the one key I used for years! Will cutting and programming another key help my situation or are they just pulling my leg?
