I have always found it easier to stand on something than to bend over a short car.
You gotta watch them milk crates though they will leave you hanging if your not careful.
I sat on my rad once... feet planted on either frame rail... then the rad cap started to leak while I was sitting there and although the engine didn't feel that hot... well lets just say I still have a mark on my... well you know ware...

Do be careful standing on milk crates.
I do that as well, but funny story here.
I was out in the yard one day just walking around.
Kept hearing what sounded like someone moaning.
So I walked up towards the neighbors house, there he lays on the ground with a milk crate up around his calf.
He was working on his siding, had a scaffold board set up on a couple ladders about 3 feet off the ground.
He was using a milk crate step to up and down from the board.
Stepped off the board on the milk crate, his foot went right through the bottom and it grabbed his leg like a Chinese handcuff.
His struggles to get it off had his leg all tore up, and the way the crate was broken he could not remove it by himself.
Now I put a piece of plywood on the bottom before I use a milk crate as a stepping stool, because I am a lot bigger fellow than my neighbor is.
I only weigh about 200, my neighbor is in the 160 range.
I use a 3 step ladder for working on trucks. It has a big base so it doesn't tip or fall over. It also has a nice big table top for holding tools, parts, and bolts.
When I have to get further into the engine bay I end up kneeling on the radiator with a couple shop towels for padding. Sometimes I go as far as kneeling on the vacuum pump top for the far far back stuff.
It sucks, ford should be the first to look into removable front clips for easy engine access.
I have a homemade bumper made out of drillstem and with a grille guard welded on top of the drillstem. So I just climb up on it, and if I'm still to short (I'm 6'4) I just find something to on the motor to sit on.
With the new models a removable clip would do nothing.
When you have to remove the cab to get to the back of the motor, that is a bit much.

A user's truck engine needed new injectors.
When he stopped in the dealers shop to check on the truck, the cab was off the frame hanging in the air above the truck.
If you can't change injectors without removing the cab, wanna guess what working on the turbo must be like?
And I don't think that was a Ford idea either, but more like what they had to do to get the front aerodynamic enough to meet Federal MPG requirements and still have a vehicle short enough to fit in a parking space.
That may not be such an issue with a regular cab, but the extended cabs and crew cabs would have to be two feet longer to be able to get to the back of the engine from under the hood.
Wonder why the repair bills at shops are getting so high?
I know all about that and I think it is crap. I am very very disappointed in ford for stuff like that. For mpg? my grandfather had a 1980 F150 that made 20 mpg, today the f150 makes 20 mpg... Where is the technology? Extreme lean burn engines is where its at ford, get on the ball!!
Anyhow I think ford could bring the motor back forward if they would just take some more time engineering the front end components like intercooler, radiator, condensor, etc. that take up all the forward room. Sure in front is easiest for clean air but there is all kinds of room all over in these trucks that would work just fine for most of these components and they would still work fine.
Ford engineering ****'s me off and I really don't even like thinking or talking about it. lol
i come in at a stubby 5'6" or so.i sit on the radiator with my feet somewhere in the engine bay,or turn the tires and stand on them.but it is a good excuse to get a beefy bumper with a winch mount.....
Dido!!! Im about just as tall and I sit in the engine bay with my feet somewhere beside it as well!!
And as MLSC sayed with the front bumper, I stuck a thunder struck grill on my 95 chevy a few years back and it has a lower square bar that works great to get up into the engine.Made by this company but mine is discontinued i think. Netscape Search

My F100 I had generally got 18 everywhere it went, but I got it up to 23 once on a long highway trip with both windows up and no AC and cruise set on 60. It is kinda sad to think that my old worn out (323K miles, burned a quart of oil ever 100-150 miles) could get that kind of mileage, but these new trucks can barely get that even with superior fuel systems and far better aerodynamics, not to mention my F100 is only a 3 speed no OD, and the 09 has 2 OD gears.

Sadly FMC, Even being 6'4 doesn't help enough on these trucks. I am also 6'4 and I find myself having to climb to get to my back injectors. Part of that is my bumper that sticks out a good 8 inches and the taller tires on my truck but, still its a long way to the back of the motor.
On a side note, its why I love these trucks. LEG ROOM!!!!. Its one of the few vehicles I feel is made for full grown men. Alot of the new vehicles, even the newer F150's make me feel uncomfortable and out of place, because even though there might be enough room for my legs, I feel I am disperportionate for the vehicle, but my truck I feel like I'm home.
The way I understand the motor sticking under the cab thing is a govt thing but nothing to do with mileage.
Supposedly they are designed to go under the cab in a wreck intead of into it.
