223 Tapping

223 Tapping

I have a 1956 F100 with a 223 6 cylinder engine. The engine has high miles, but runs very smooth, idles well, and has good power. It however, has a clear tapping sound at idle. I checked the valve lash, was all ok, and then isolated the sound through a rubber hose as coming from the inside of the block, around the number 5 or 6 cylinder. What do you think it could be? Lifter? Rod? Pushrod? It is a solid metal to metal tapping, not real loud, but not dull. What should be my next step? Thanks

in the case of my flatty it started out as a tap , and has gotten a lil' worse but not to the point of being unable to drive her .... yet ! i thought maybe a keeper fell off a valve assembly , then tried the pumps , dizzy , and several other things and have come to the conclusion its a piston pin / wrist pin as some refer to 'em . obviously my flatty is a whole lot different than yer 223 , but first observations would be the same for me . bad lifter, or a piston pin . not the end of the world , just time to fix it and you might as well go through her to make sure . it's what i got planned for mine , with a " few " imprvements....

If you've isolated the tap, then it's time to pull the Lower End & do an Inspection, as that'll be the most proactive thing to do to solve the problem.
