What do you think bout this?

Well I am using my dad's account but here is my question.

I am looking at a 99 Ford F-250, V10, automatic, 200k miles, extended cab, short bed. I want to know what could happen, how common it is because I am on a limited budget, motocross racing and college in a year keeps it tight, and I cannot afford to do to much to this truck after I buy it. My dad has a 01 7.3 PSD and I absolutely love it but I am looking at the V10 and from reading thru the forum it sounds like there are quite a few possible issues with the early V10s at these hi miles. I just need to know what you think and if it would be possible to own this sweet truck with out dumpin money and doin tons of repairs to it 3 or 6 months down the road (reliability and durability). Thank you for everything.

If it were me, 200K miles on a gasser is living on borrowed time. I would never ever buy a gas vehicle (even the V10) with that many miles on it and not be ready to dump money into it if something blows up.

Of course, that may not happen for another 100K miles, but who knows.

You need to do a compression/leak-down test and check the REAL oil pressure (not according to the dash gauge) to see how the motor is doing to be really sure.

That, and the automatic tranny are unknowns.

Drive it - any smoke? Any shifting issues? Does the steering wander?

I would have it checked out by a reputable mechanic. 3 to 6 months down the road who knows a 50,000 mi truck might die on you, its all a crap shoot you just need to make an educated decision with your head and not with your wants.

And most important to me, how was it treated?
If it was used by a mature adult with almost entirely freeway miles, with meticulous maintenance records, and regular oil and transmission fluid changes, then 200K may be a non issue.
If owned by some bubba who drives it like he stole it and can't remember when oil was changed, then run away.

I will also add that the truck your looking at should not go for much. Even if in mint shape considering the mileage, age and its a gasser the price should be around the $6k mark. If the engine was looked after 200k miles wouldn't be my main concern, the trans and other components would. You get to a certain point when age and miles take their toll and start costing $$$.

If you can pssibly hold off until you get out of college and have a decent job to buy a truck I would. I waited until I got out of college and then bought the new truck. Besides when fuel hits the $3+ a gallon again (will happen) it will screw your budget something fierce, especially at 10-14mpg.
