I bought a new 99' f150 XLT with bucket seats and center console. None of the cup holders, including the ones in the dash hold ANYTHING securely. The holes seem like they were designed to hold flower pots rather than pop cans or coffee cups. Rock and Roll should describe my radio selection, not what my drink containers are doing! Does anyone make aftermarket inserts that will take up the slack or make things fit better?
I haven't found anything commercially available, so made some myself. I used 1/4" oak and cut out basically a large "washer" that fits the cup holder opening very snug. The inside diameter is now perfect for pop cans and insulated coffee cups and works similar to the cup holders in my 94' Ranger. I stained and waxed them to blend well with the tan interior in my XLT. If I ever get the urge to transport flower pots, I just snap the inserts out and nothing shows.
Went to K-Mart. Found insulated can holders with hard plastic cups inside. Chose color I liked. Removed hard cups, inserted insulation in cupholders, then inserted hard cups to wedge them in place. Fits cans and car cups. No more wobble. Cost: Less than $2.
The soda cans fit OK in the cupholders above the ash tray. As for the ones on the console... you have to look around and find cups that fit. I've found that the ones that you can by on the interstate at the restaurants (refillable) seem to fit fine. They are large up top and smaller diameter at the bottom 2 inches or so.
