Power Take-Off Provisions

A quick search of this forum gave me no useful information on the PTO provisions.

does anybody know what it includes? What additional equipment would be necessary to run something like an air compressor or a hydraulic pump?

Can the upfitter switches be used to engage a clutch so it doesn't run all the time?

i only have one 38 gallon tank, and I was thinking I'd put a ~38 gallon air tank on the opposite side...you know to easily air up trailer and tractor tires...and maybe supply a set of Nathan or Leslie 5 chimes...

Without any real experience, especially with the newer SD's, the PTO option includes a cover on the side of the transmission with a gear inside it that can drive a "standard" PTO take-off unit. The unit bolts to the side of the transmission, and is driven by gear teeth on the outside of a drum or other piece inside the transmission.

The PTO option usually includes a way to up-idle the engine, but I think this is possible even without the PTO option these days - there is an input to the PCM that, with the right resistor, will make the engine idle up. Not sure if it's there for the gassers without the PTO option though.

From the PTO unit, you'd have to run a driveshaft to the compressor, which means it would have to be mounted somewhere behind the tranny, or in the bed, with a belt/chain running down to the idler shaft.

Lots of work, and the PTO unit itself is quite expensive apparently.

You might be better off looking at electric compressors.

The PTO option is good for dump trucks, tilt flatbeds, and other setups that require hydraulic power, but running a generator or compressor from it is not always the most cost-effective solution.

With an electric compressor, you get the luxury of mounting it anywhere you want, as long as you can run big enough cables to it

if nobody sells a gear driven screw type compressor that will mount directly to the transmission, I think a belt drive will be the best bet. Electric compressors are just too limited in what they can do for their size since they have to have a motor on them. There are already plenty of things turning, there must be some way to use them.

Maybe somebody even sells a belt driven air compressor with a pulley clutch for a superduty... now, there is a good use for an upfitter switch...

The factory upfitter switches are a common way to hook up a PTO and this can be done on a gasser just like it is with a diesel...

First problem with running a PTO on a gasser is Ford does not make access to the PTO port easy. Be ready to make some exhaust modifications. This is a statement from the Ford order guide...

Transmission Power Take-Off Provision (Std. w/manual
transmissions; Opt w/auto transmissions w/the Power Stroke®
diesel engine; PTO obstructed by catalyst placement on 5.4L & 6.8L
engines)

Second issue is cost. PTO setups are costly and unless you are using it for business purposes it can be hard to swallow...

Underhood belt driven compressors are a viable option. VMAC makes some real nice units. The problem here once again is cost as they do not come cheap...
