Heater not working

If my wifes truck is sitting idleing or running at low RPM's the heater does not work, it will blow cold air. Then once you get going it will go back to blowing hot air again. Any idea what might cause this? Also I know that I need to change the thermostat out as it has never been replaced, looking at it, it does not appear that hard but looks can be deceiving, so any information on that would be greatly appreciated also.

Thank you.

Your on the right track with the thermostat. What does the water temp gauge say? I'm guessing its shooting up while driving then just going back down after you stop. Its pretty easy to change. Make sure you only use motorcraft premium gold coolant when refilling. You can get it from your ford dealer its about 15 bucks a gallon.

Also if you don't want to mess with it. I had the thermostat go out on one of my plow trucks a few weeks ago and didn't have time to mess with it myself and ford did it for $250 in and out in a couple hours and they even flushed the coolant.

I am having the same problem with my 04. I need to be pullin pretty hard on a load before the heat starts to flow. The temp gauge stays pretty constant, no up or down, but from what I read on here you can't trust the factory gauges too much.
