More 4x4 engagement problems

I am trying to fix my mother-in-laws 97 F-150. When you pull the floor transfer case shifter from 2 to 4wd.....it engages the transfer case, but not the differential and does not show the 4x4 light on the dash. I used a mityvac at at the solenoid vacuum lines and manually engaged/disengaged the diff. Both solenoids click when 12v are applied to the contacts. What tells the solenoids to engage the front diff? the two wire switch on the drivers side of the transfercase? If any one can point me in the right direction or to a wire or vacuum diagram that would be great! I've just been thru this front end engagement problem twice with my 350....but of course ford has to have many types of systems to keep us on our toes. Thanks in advance for the help! Tim

In all the 4x4 Fords I have had, whether manually or some type of switch, if the 4x4 light will not come on, it meant the transfer case is not in the correct position, regardless of the lever or switch setting. Does the front shaft turn when it is locked in? It sounds like the system for locking the wheels is OK, but is the transfer case actually engageing the front drive shaft?

I put the front end on jack stands and put a jumper between the two wires that plug into the transfer case just next to the selector shift linkage. Still no 4x4 light in the dash. But when you pull it from 2 to 4wd, the transfer case engages the front driveshaft as it should. Does anyone know where the 2 wire plug from the manual transfer case goes?
Thanks
