I did the dreaded spark plug change this week. I have a 1990 4.0. I replaced them with the APP105 double platinum, and autolite pro wires. The ones I pulled out were ap765 I think, and were very worn. The wires on the passenger side had very hard boots, one I actually had to cut off because it broke pulling it off. The drivers side ones were more flexible. I jacked up the van and the passenger side first. The front and middle plug came out from the wheel well, and I used a spark plug socket and open end wrench to pull out the rear one. The drivers side all came out from above. I only had to use a ratchet, 6 inch extension, plug socket and open end wrench.
I put anti sieze on the plugs, and put in the new wires. Cranked right up, and runs a bit smoother now. It had started to idle rough.
Honeywell/Autolite still shows the APP765 in their online parts book and in their search lookup.
the APP105 appears to be same plug except it is threaded to end of steel shell. the old APP765 had that special small diameter unthreaded end of the steel shell.
may make the replacement 105 too easy to crossthread and hard to start in hole.
There is an AP105, and APP105. The APP part number is for double platinum. All the information I found was that the 105 replaced the 765. The looked the same, except for the threading extending all the way. I had no problem with cross threading putting in the new plugs. I bought mine from advance auto parts, but they try to sell bosch first, then the single platinum, so you have to ask for the double plats.
