It is very possible to put the Powerstroke in your truck, but if you are going to do it, make sure you take every piece of wiring harness, pull the dash and take everything that you can, all the wiring and gauges if you can get them as well.
I would take every piece from the donor truck that I could to make it easier. I just put a 7.3l IDI into my truck that had a 5.8L gas. I took motor mounts, crossmember, fuel tanks, fuel lines, transmission, transmission mount, crossmember, all the underhood wiring, all the wiring behind the dash and the gauges and trim with the wts and wif lights. I also had to take drive shafts and rear end yolk to make everything easier.
When you put the diesel in place of a gas engine, it sets about 2 inches farther forward and the drive shafts will not work, and then when you try to use the diesel drive shafts the rear end yolk wouldn't work due to the larger U-joint. But I finally got it done and I am just waiting on a new starter.
If you are going with the PowerStroke just make sure to get the IDM as well as all the other computer hardware.
The manufacturers claim around a 80 Hp increasem if you were to go that route.
thanks
ok so i think im gonna go with an ATS wastegate turbo system. but just wondering... im a die hard ford man but i do like cummins, how possible would it be to put in a cummins. not gonna do it. just want to know
Cummins swaps are doable, but a lot of choices come along as well, since you have to either mate it to your trans or use a different trans, and a host of other things that come up.
gasisforsissies,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
Since the other questions have been answered I will go a bit farther into the Power Stroke question.
How good are you at wiring?
The IDI you have now is a mechanical motor.
Power Strokes are electrical motors.
Example of changes you would not suspect, the throttle on an IDI has a cable to the IP.
The Power Stroke has a rheostat mounted on the throttle pedal that goes to the computer to tell it how hard you are pressing the pedal.
Yes even the throttle pedal has to change and be wired up.
wow yeah definately gonna go with the turbo. or maybe sell my truck and use the money to buy a powerstroke. i do love my 6.9 though. thanks for the welcome.
To get the turbo benifits you need to upgrade your exhaust.
With the right upgrades it is possible to get stroker performance without the complexities.

Turbo helps the power output a lot and better MPGs...
Turbo - cold air - and 4' exhuast will help...
yeah, i know a little more than jack ***** as i just jumped into the diesel world... but i like it a lot so far. the recruited talent is my cousin who is a mechanic that specializes in ford trucks. and yeah, i live in california (sucks i know) but i think ill be able to pull it off. especially since diesel doesnt have to pass smog... they simply wont know
