Thanks for the great info dchamberlain. I am more of a backyard mechanic but I'll see if I find the problem with this new info. I can't screw it up anymore than it is.Thanks again.

I have an Excursion V10 4x4. I'm having trouble with my ESOF as well. I'm not getting the indicator light on the dashboard nor the swith. I changed out the shift motor and that didn't work. From what I gather it could be the relays. I think they the ones next to the fuse box under the hood. There are two relay boxes with two relays. Which one is it. The one parallel to the vehicle or the one perpendicular more towards the front.

tony, it's hard to say which box is which, especially as for different years, they tend to move around

What year X do you have?

If I remember correctly, the shift relays are identical, while the relays in the other box are the fuel pump and something else that do not appear to be identical.

Swap the shift relays and see if it works.

Well I gave up on trying to get a GEM module to see if that was the trouble and for my truck it was behind the fuse box on the back of it. A new one from Ford is $559 +tax and shipping. So I rigged up a switch that is made to control a plow motor(reverses polarity) and connected it thru my brake pedal switch so you can't switch the tranfer case unless you have your foot on the brake. Not pretty but it works and it gets me back and forth from work. Thanks to everyone that helped. Great site

Interesting solution

Does it always go into 4x4 LOW like that, or does it stop at 4HI?

Krewat the shift motor will stop in any position you just need to release the switch when the 4HI light comes on or wait till the 4LO lite comes on, also you can hear it drop into 4LO. Hold the switch the other way and it will shift back until no lights are on and she's in 2wd. I only put it in 4wd when I hit the ditch or I'm pulling someone else out so it works for me.

So, if you put a manual transfer case in, replace the electronic one, do you have to do anything to the computer or ECM? I ask because I have a complete manual transfer case with the linkage, shifter and boot. iwould love to put this in my truck.

Thanks!

I think it might depend on the year, but the PCM does get an input from the transfer case as to whether or not it's in 4x4LOW. But I think the manual will do the same thing.
