i installed a fresh 351 windsor in my truck and hired a mechanic to come over and help me break it in. now i am worried bigtime. first of all it is has 69 heads ported with manley valves ,comp springs and comp roller tip rockers. 030 over kieth black pistons ,clevite bearings etc. the problem is it wasent getting gas and this guy was rolling the engine over and over. no start. also it was killing brand new 1000 cranking amp batteries after 15 secs of cranking.the neg. wire at batt. would start smoking. we thought the mech. fuel pump wasent getting gas to carb before we lost the battery. the engine also has a sqeak while rolling over. oh it is in an unheated garage. yesterday i found that the push on connector at the tank is leaking when i blow into the vent tube.it has a new tank so the system was dry. the reason i was blowing on this i was trying to get fuel up to the pump as it wasent geetting there by cranking. that worked by found the leak. not a bad leak by a leak none the less. we did prime the oil but not till we cranked the crap out of the engine. when i tried to turn the engine over by hand backwards i loosened the crank nut. it wont move.i can turn it over forward but man it is hard and sqeaks like crazy. does anyone have any input here i am worried about the engine. it was built at a reputable machine shop and cost me like 7000. iam a paycheck to paycheck guy and cannot afford and complications
I wouldn't be to worried about the engine as long as it had good oil pressure. Hopefully you are using a high torque starter. My first 351w that I rebuilt 30 years ago, 10 1/2 compression etc. etc. luckily had a 4 speed behind it. I had to drag that car for over 1/2 mile before it would start (the starter wouldn't even think about turning it over).Anyways once I got it started drove it back to the house, set everything and didn't shut it off for a couple of hours. Never had a problem starting after that. Turned out to be a damn good running engine.
I dont know man , but I dont think it should be that hard to turn the thing over by using a ratchet wrench, and it damn sure should`nt be making any squealing noises. That sounds like friction in the bearings/piston clearance.I just did a 393 and it started soon as I hit the button.Try taking all the plugs out and priming the oil pump and turning it over by hand. It should turn easily. If it still is hard to turn loosen the rocker arms and retry, you might want to give the builder a call.
i agree with stroker . call the engine builder before doing anything , motor should turn over easily . somethings up . id pull the filter and check for the dreaded flecks of metal . my 600 cubic inch chevy stroker 10.5 to1 can be rolled over by hand with a breaker bar w/ plugs installed .
