My ABS light came on a month or 2 back, and has been on ever since. I have replaced both the VSS speed sensor on the rear differential, and the CPS. None of this made any difference. When I pulled codes with AE, I get a code for the right front wheel ABS sensor.
I have also started hearing a humming sound when on the freeway. As a first step I replaced my differential fluid in front and rear differentials with Royal purple, and still hear the hum sound. However to me it sounds more like tire noise than a bearing. I have not changed any tires either.
I have read somewhere that when the ABS light stays on, that is normally an indication that the front hubs are on their way out. ( Which is what I am suspecting, mine is a 4x4) However when I jack up the wheels, I cannot feel any play on the hub bearings.
I figured I would swing it by you guys first before replacing the hub bearing with ABS sensor units.
Also, can anyone recommend where is the best place to buy new hub bearing units?
A few months ago I went round and round chasing a ABS light issue. I changed out the VSS checked sensors etc. It turned out to be a wire issue. The wire that goes from the hub up into the wheel well on the right front was rubbed in two. The retaining clip that holds the wire away from the tire had come loose. The tire was coming into contact with the tire when turning deep. I don't know if this is your problem but it's worth checking. I spliced the wire back together with some quality splices, taped everything up and replaced the retainer clib with a zip tie. No problems since.
"Tire was rubbing the wire, not tire rubbing tire "

I agree with Bob. I would look into swapping out the cable before I changed hubs out.
If you do replace the hub units, you can try the Ford dealer and ask for fleet pricing. That is how I got mine and they weren't too bad. That way, you get factory parts and not some Chinese knock offs from a parts house.
Or if you call around, get different prices.. the Ford dealer ship may match the price..
On a side note, I dont have the info infront of me.. but the hub assembly is made by timkin.. so when you quote it.. use the timkin number.. this way you know you are not getting knock offs..
Just read this morning on another post that the ABS light will stay on if the brake fluid level drops to a certain point. What the heck it is cheap to check. Hope that helps.
