I have a 1996 ford f-150 long wheel base with 5 speed transmisson, and it makes a creaking sound when I start to drive off. It will also creak some when driving on rough road, but it dont creak when shaking truck up or down or pushing it side to side. The throw out bearing does not sound good and I was wondering if it might be possible that the pressue plate might be making this sound.
Have you checked the u-joints? I've had them make this type of noise when they were shot. Try to turn the shaft and see if you can find any play, go side to side with the caps also. Sometimes you may have to have someone else try to move the truck with the parking brake on while you watch the shaft for play at the joints(don't be under the truck!!). If you have a two piece driveshaft, make sure you don't have any slop at the splines(slip joint) and it's well lubed. If you have a carrier bearing, should check this also as the shaft would be turning in this. Hope this gives you some other ideas of where to check, don't like them kind of noises! Chuck P.
We checked the u-joints and they were fine. We gave up finding the problem ourselves and took it to the Ford dealership. They knew right away that it was the transmission cross-member. They removed the bolts on the bottom of the rail, drilled the holes bigger, then threaded the hole and installed a bigger bolt with a nut on top along with a rubber gasket between the frame rail and the transmission bracket. This totally stopped the creaking sound and the truck is now extremely quiet. Thanks again for your help!
Thanks T.C., this is one that I haven't heard of before! I'm glad to hear you got it taken care of so quickly with a dealer that actually knew what, where and how to locate and repair the problem. I'll file this one away for future reference! Chuck
