so i just did the HEI conversion today on my 66 f250 390 truck.......it wont fire, it gets fuel and spark and air aswell. i had two friends over and we are all pretty mechanically inclined, not so much on carb trucks/cars and we are stumped. it back fired out the carb twice when trying to start it, possibly a timing problem? any help would be awesome.
the HEI kit it a crane kit and coil if you need to know. also did a oil change with new filter and new spark plugs.
It sounds to me that it is a timing problem. You mentioned in your post that you have air, fuel and spark which is what is required to produce combustion. Since you have spark you know the new ignition components are working correctly so in my mind all that is left is something in the timing.
When the electronic portion of your system triggers your ignition coil, your rotor is not lined up with the distributor cap, sending the voltage through your spark plug wire at the correct time to tiger combustion. Take a look under your distributor cap and when the engine is on Top Dead Center (TDC) number 1 cylinder, make sure your trigger wheel lines up, which is what triggers the coil, and make sure the rotor lines up with the post on the distributor cap for number 1 cylinder. Then your truck should be running again.
The mechanicaly inclined part throws me off. Since you stated you just did the conversion I assume the engine was running fine prior to the change. If so, then all it could be is the new pieces of the puzzle. Take #1 plug out, use a dowel and rotate the engine until you feel it hit TDC. As stated above, its just a matter of lining the rotor up with #1 position. Only other thing is double check the firing order and make sure they are all plugged in properly.
If this is an engine that was not previously running, then it introduces a whole host of other possible problems.
Correct polarity on the coil? How does the spark look? Nice and blue or kinda orange? Also double and triple check the firing order. Good luck! PS... My other ride is a 89 notch too, but in red!
the truck was running great when i drove it home then i parked it for a couple days and it didnt start. i figured it was the points so i ordered the hei conversion kit. i double and triple checked the firing order it is correct. the spark looked blue. we were just trying to get it to fire then we were going to fix the timing with a light. didnt try and take the #1 plug out and get it tdc as stated above. my friend that was over today usually times our mustangs and he said you can usually hear if its 180 out or close then he times it with light. but he said it didnt seem close at all. i'm not sure. timing isn't something i am strong on, but we will be back at it tomorrow. i appreciate the help everyone and if you have any more ideas thanks ahead of time.
slo5.0.......yeah i got a 89 notch i'm sure you figured that out. i have a close group of friends about 10 guys we all have foxes and we do shows cruises go to the track together. mine has 75,000 original miles i am the second owner i got trick flow heads cam and intake 5spd 95 front spindles with 13' brakes....etc etc etc fun cars i wouldnt trade or sell it for anything.
