hey fellers!
i have a 2004 f150 supercab and i want to beef up the sound system. i want just a little bit of punch, and just some better quality. looking to spend maybe 500 dollars. where sould i start?
I have a 2000 model also, and I am planning on adding 2 8" JL under the center console. I haven't built the box yet,but its in the plans soon. I plan on upgrading the door speakers also, and head unit. Just using an amp on the subs. I figure this will be good enough.
It takes a big speaker to play lower notes. Even with the premium sound system, your missing from 100Hz-20Hz, which works out to around 3 octaves. The plus side is you can do a bit of fixing this for $500. If your just after sound, I would try to mount a single 12" with a decent amp. You only need 100 watts for such a set up so the amp is relatively inexpensive.
A bigger sub can hold low notes longer than a 8" or 10" but the 8" and 10" have a quicker response.
So 8" 10" are actually better for rock music with the quick response and the 12" and up are better for rap or hip hop as it has longer low tones. The 8" still has the same frequency response example 20 hz to 500hz.
I prefer the 12" middle of the road approach but size restrictions don't always allow for the larger speaker.
Now something I have learned is anything above about 70 or 80 hz is localized and you can actually tell it's coming from the sub and pulls the soundstage backwards so I crossover to midrange at about 80 anyway and let the front speakers handle those frequencys above 80.
P.S I'm not a technician or anything but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.
Nice job crum!
Also mtong I suggest components for the front doors amped and a new head unit, then in the future do what crum did.
Headunit: $150.00 and up
front components: $200.00 and up
Amp: $150.00 and up
Install would be extra as would be the mounting kits. So this may be a little over budget unless you buy used as I did.
so your sayin to put in new front speakers and put an amp to em, then put in a new head unit? what about the rear speakers? would i be getting over my budget you think? also, what size speakers go in this truck?
The rears really are not important they pull sound away from the front stage. I just ran my stock rears off the head unit for now for a little bit of rear fill for people that sit in the back it sounds just fine mainly because I can't hear them from the front.
In a super cab I really don't think rears are needed. I would spent my money all on fronts.
With a good set of components up front you should be good down to 60-70 hz or so then later you can get a sub to fill in the 30 to 80 hz and all will be good.
