I was wondering if anyone can help me out again. I have a 1996 ford F-250 its a 7.5 V8 460 engine. I bought it almost 2 years ago and ive had to add almost 3 gallons of antifreeze to it. I have not seen any leaks, theres nothing on the ground or in the snow. it doesnt run hot the gauge is in the normal range. I took it on a 200 mile trip and it ran great. It does sit in the drive way for 1 week or long when i am not using it. But i was just wondering is that normal to add that much antifreeze in that peroid of time.
thanks for all the help.
Does it have any white residue on the inside of the oil filler cap like it could be getting into the oil or burning it?
thanks for replying there no residue on the inside of the cap. if the antifreeze was going in the oil would the oil over flow and start to come out where the dip stick goes?
thanks again
I have seen it get into the oil many times and its never come out the dipstick. I think with the high temp of the oil it mostly just evaporates. But if you aren't seeing the white milky residue under the oil cap then you are ok. Its not getting into the oil. If it was getting into one of the cylinders it would foul out one of you plugs most likely. I would then say maybe a slow leak somewhere. If you aren't seeing it and its running ok. I would say antifreeze is pretty cheap. Just run it like it is and count you blessings.
I would think if your oil is clean and you have no leaks it is probably burning off or you have a minor intake or head gasket leak. My 351 uses maybe a cup per oil change. always has since I got it with 60,000 on it.I have never found any white sluge under the oil cap and nothing except oil has ever came out of the drain plug.
Just keep track of it and if its usage goes up suddenly start investigating again.

My personal experience was extremely isolated and should not be taken to the bank.
My truck was leaking a similar amount of coolant and long story short the engine went in for a re-build. The tech discovered three cracks in three different cylinder walls, I was essentially burning off the coolant at a slow enough rate that it didn't affect performance.
I seriously doubt that a well maintained 460 would suffer such carnage. I would start investigating in the area of the heater core. They seep when they begin to fail and you may never know.
thanks everyone for the help. I started my truck up on monday and let is run for about 20 mins and then i opened the hood and noticed that the antifreeze was past the full mark. I was always adding antifreeze to the truck when it was cold. all week Ive been driving it and when i get home i leave it running and check for the antifreeze and it been in the same spot, usually i would have to add more antifreeze by now. I am going to take it in and have it checked out just to make sure.
But now i have another problem there is a squeel coming from my serpentine belt, I sprayed it with belt conditioner and di stopped for a few mins then came right back so ive been spraying it alot. Is that normal? the belt is tight and all of the wheels that the belt goings around same tight and no give to them. Any more help would be great
thanks again

These trucks do suffer seized Thermactor pumps (smog pump), which will definitely make it squeal. CAREFULLY (lots of moving parts!) look closely at the pump's pulley, which is down low on the r/h side of the block, and make sure it's actually turning, rather than the belt slipping around it.
Do you smell burning rubber? When mine seized, I did, even though the truck was only idling when it happened. I have had two trucks have such seizures--both upon startup, after sitting a few days/weeks.
For years mine has regurgitated coolant out of the expansion tank. New radiators, new caps, T stats etc don't fix it. I don't know why it does it. I have to add a quart to mine about once a month. I can see it overflowing the tank though. The tank doesn't have a pressurized cap its just a lid.
Also, I have often seen the expansion tanks crack and leak.
Thanks everyone for all the help, you all are great. I take my truck in tomorrow at 8 am for the squeeling sound. I'll update what they find tomorrow.
thanks again.
well i took my truck in today and i was told that the noise was my belt was on wrong so he took it off and put it back on and the noise stopped until i got in the truck and got ready to leave then it came back. I went back in and he told me it was the pulley so i had to have a new one put on well guess what after everthing was done and i got home the noise started again. it wasnt the pulley it was the belt i had a new one put on by my brother and it stopped for good. it cost 18.99 for anew belt and 450.00 for the other stuff that didnt work.can you believe my luck
Now i have a question. Sorry for highjacking. mine has never put coolant back into the hold tank it stays in the system and when i put some in the hold tank it sucks it up and then just sucks air. also the hose from the radiator to the engine will go flat like there's air in there it's always done this and doesn't really seem to be a problem. i was wonder if anyone every put a hose in there that had springs in it to keep it from going flat? and why i can't keep antifrezze in the hold tank?

Where did you buy a belt for 18.99? and what brand was it? I payed over 42.00(not including tax) for a Gates serpentine belt for my '94 at a Pronto Auto Parts store, Pronto is the cheapest place for quality parts near where I live.
