Help!!!

Ok heres the low down. I was driving the other day with my dad and he said can i drive i told him it was ok and then we ran out of gas. My dad forced my truck to the gas station which was just down the street. We put gas turned the truck back on and now it struggles to stay on. I think we picked up all the dirt and nasty stuff at the bottom of the tank cuz it still wont stay on and now its just sitting there and im so pissed. Im thinking that my fuel filter is clogged up and is not letting fuel in but im not sure. What do yall think? Oh and one other thing how do i get my fuel gauge to start working again cuz thats the only reason we ran out of gas.

Calm down man it'll be alright. Whats the stats on your truck, year, engine size, ect ect?

If you can pop off your fuel filter and give it a look over, if its pugged and you don't have a replacement handy you can shoot some carb cleaner through it and maybe work at it a little with some q-tips, that should at least be enough to get your rig home if its sitting somewhere else.

If you've got a carbed engine they can get a little temperamental when they run outta gas. It makes matters worse of course if they manage to suck gunk in and plug the works up. Just work at it until you get it running. You may have to give it a little gas to keep it going, don't get mad and rev the hell outta it or anything though. It'll be fine after you let it run a while and flush itself with clean fuel. Of course replace your filter as soon as possible. If you've got a carb and its never been rebuilt now might be a good time to go through it and clean her out.

As for your fuel gauge does it not read correctly? Does it read empty when there's still fuel in the tank? Sending units are a problem area on these old trucks. If you want your gauge to read correctly you'll have to drop the fuel tank off the truck and replace the sending unit. Not really a hard job, but it could be a little overwhelming if you've never done it before.
