Hello, I have a couple of complete newbie questions that hopefully somebody can answer for me....
Backstory: Ive had a 75 f150 with a 460 auto for a couple weeks now...was starting it up and let it run 10-15 mins twice a day during that time.. ran great. (engine and holly 4v carb both recently rebuilt)
Like an idiot, I let it run out of gas. Refilled the tank and now the truck wont start
Im thinking that a bunch of crud got sucked up and clogged the fuel filter.. which is the cannister type right on the fuel pump...looks like there is also a small filter on the front of the carb?
Now, are these filters stock items at NAPA etc...? Or do i need to order them online? Is there anything i need to do when replacing the cannister filter? Clamp off fuel hose? special tool?
As far as I know there is no filter replacment for the fuel pump, but then again I never tried to find one. I just replaced the pump as I was getting no fuel. There is however a filter on the end of the pick-up tube inside the tank. U can get the one at the carb at any auto parts house. Did yopu try priming it at the carb a few times to see if it would pick it up with it running ? I will try to add pic's of the filter in the tank and the one on the fuel pump, but I don't think you will find it anywhere.I will try to put pic's in my gallery as they are to big and won't download to here. Again I would prime it a few times at the carb before I tore it apart, I think it will pick it up. pic's finally in my gallery
my 302 had the same type of filter on it. a cannister attatched right onto the fuel pump. you can find a replacement filter for it a dennis-carpenter. com. i have the catalog in front of me the part number is C4AZ-9365-A

Checked out the pics in your gallery, exact match on those filters. Will try priming the carb before i start ordering filters
another total newb question: how exactly do i prime the carb? few ounces of gas in the top opening of carb? (after air filter off)
also.. did you get the bottom part of fuel filter housing off by hand or with a wrench?

Yes,to prime it just take air cleaner top off, open choke with finger and pour a little gas in ( maybe under 1/4 cup) replace filter top in case of back fire start as usual, may take a few times, but this will save your starter and wires from being over heated while fuel gets pumped to the front of truck. I used a pipe wrench to take it apart, I had 2 filters in the shed, only one was screwed on the other was crimped and could not be removed.
Ok,
__need to check 2 things before "priming" anything.
You'll need to check your fuel pump.
Then your carb's filter.
First; pull the fuel hose comming in to the F-pump.
2:Run a seperate fuel line from a gas-can to the inlet side of pump.
put gas-can up on top of the close'st fender & secure.(Have someone hold it if you like.)
3: Pull the fuel-line from the carb. & put in a container of sorts. (Like a 20oz. soda bottle.) Secure this too. This is to catch any fuel that might come out.
4: Turn engine over for about a minute.(In 15sec. bursts of course.)
Now if fuel comes out, your pump is good to go.
If fuel does not come out, it is ether clogged or broke.
(Running the pump dry; is a big NO-NO. Because the diafram inside the pump is often damaged by running it dry. Sometimes causing them to quit.)
Replace filter if clogged, canister just unscrews like a canning jar. Righty-Tighty__Lefty-loosey.
You may need get a strap-wrench for this.(Used for oil filters.)
Now pull your carb's filter & check for crap in filter.
As for me; I just replace mine to save me from headachs.
