I am looking at purchasing a used diesel Excursion in the spring. The only thing that I know is that it needs to have a 7.3 and be four wheel drive. Are there any years that are better than others? Problems to look for etc? I tried searching, but could not really find anything.
My family is outgrowing our Subaru wagon. Thanks for the help.
With the 7.3, I think you are good on all the years, which would be 2000, '01, '02, and '03. There were a few trans problems with the V-10 transmission in late 2000 to early 2001, and the V-10 had a spark plug issue in '00, '01, and part of '02.
Once you find one, come on back and we'll help you set her up!!
While the 7.3 is a good engine, I truly love the 6.0 just make sure if you come across an 03 its made after May. If you buy an 7.3 just look at the oil its leaking and make sure its clear, if its pissing ink keep moving. If its not leaking oil then you better check to make sure it has some!

I'm not gonna touch that post with a 10' stick!! (But, I am sure someone will )
I love the 7.3 . I think the early 99 and 00 models had forged rods. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. My 00 is pushing 187k and only the water pump and alternator. Best truck I've ever owned. Look on youtube look up Powerstroke performance I think. The guy goes though a lot advice on buying and checking out 7.3's

I don't know, in a combined 609K miles between the three 7.3's only one has leaked oil and it was a $40 o-ring kit. The 259K mile SRW has never left a spot of oil under it, nor has the 195K mile SUV.
That is correct about the forged rod motors in the 2000 Excursions. Navistar put forged rods in all the 7.3's up through 2000 MY. Some very early 2001's have forged rods but the 2001's had the mechanical diode failure in the tranny.
Imo, the cream of the crop 7.3 would have to be the 00 only because of the forged rod motor. If there are no plans to mod though the powdered rods hold up just fine. The newest 7.3 would of course be those made up until 2003.25.
Things to look for in the X are the same things for the most part to look for in the Super Duty line.
There a few things more common to fail in the X though. Due to a 8K lb curb weight in a 4x4 diesel x the rotors seem to have a short life. With five power doors you will be replacing door lock actuators from time to time.
