Since I got into Amsoil my prior 50 years of driving experience is of no use to me, lol. But I've got a couple questions I'd like your opions on with my 5.4. First, Is Amsoil all bs and shall I return to Mobile 1 or the like? Second, I'm comfortable using 5w20 in our often very cold weather and mild summers but what about going down to Phoenix where it's over a 100 about a month in summer. (Tell my wife not to go there then, she won't listen to me.) I'm thinking 0W30. Finally, is there any sound reason for changing at 3k? Seems only the US is told to do that, and way back in '97 my wife's STS would often have two or three times that before the computer told her to change. Seems useless to me, particularly since we have to drive five miles just to get to the highway, so engine is never run cold.
idk about the 5.4 but i would imagin its not much differnt from the 5.8, i have a 5.8 and i use 5w30 all year hot and cold and i change it maybe twice a year
This actually should be in the "oil" forum, where the guys are always waiting to pounce.
If it's a 5.4 modular, MotorCraft 5w-20 and the MC FL820S filter seems to be THE setup, although I can't imagine a 5w-30 or 0w-30 doing any harm. I ran Mobil 1 5-30 in my 5.4's for years, before figuring out that MC 5-20 seems to work just as well, and costs less. Plus, there was always the possibility of a warranty claim problem ("well, Mr. West, it appears you used 5-30 instead of the recommended 5-20; claim denied!!")
We've run a number of F150's/250's and E250/350's, all with mod motors, over 200,000 miles with MC 5-20 (using Fram filters in many instances) with zero issues. Here in PA, we worry more about cold weather than Phoenix-style heat, but a lot of guys at the various forums report no problems with 5-20 in their Fords in Texas, Oklahoma, etc...
MC 5-20 is made by Conoco/Phillips, and has an outstanding reputation.
If it was me, I would just go to the dealer in AZ and ask them what to use and that would be it, they're used to it. I only use whatever the book or label says. Enjoy!
