I have a 74 F-100 and I am having trouble with the front right brake locking. It has disks on the front. My driveway is on a hill and is gravel. When I go down to stop at the road my front right will slide instead of slowly coming to a stop. It is only that side. This also happens if I encounter sand or gravel in the road.
Sometimes when I am out on the road it will make a loud clunking noise as I try to stop.
It is a little scary to drive with all the rain we have been having. Any help will be appreciated.
OK, some causes of disc brakes grabbing. Brake fluid on the pads, oil on the pads, caliper piston/s sticking, caliper sliders sticking (if fitted), loose worn caliper mountiog bolts, loose/worn wheel bearing, rough/worn rotor.
However are you confident that the other brakes are not underperforming?
Hope this helps.
I am very sure the other front brake isn't under performing. I don't have to push very hard to get the right one to lock up. In fact about all I have to do is put my foot on the peddle.
Thanx for the suggestions, now I know where to start.
I went out and took the right side wheel off and disassembled the caliper. The surfaces were rough. The I took a file, knocked down some of the rust and applied a little grease to all the surfaces that looked like they would be sliding together.
I have test driven it and I don't have any problem with it locking up at the moment. I took it up to about 60 did a couple of hard stops on a new road they are building behind my house and it didn't lock or even pull one way or the other. It's nice having my own test track
I believe I am good to go.
