New Toy

I just bought an 82 Yamaha Vision. I want to transport it without a trailer, so I was going to try and find something that could go into my receiver, that I could put the bike on, that would be stable. It weighs about 500lb at most, so tongue weight wouldn't be a concern, however I am worried about it wobbling back and forth. Do they make something like this?

Are you talking about one like this

Motorcycle Caddy by Magneta Trailers / Motorycle tow device

Or like this

Motorcycle carriers for all your hauling needs

The latter ones must be limited to 500# total (rack and bike) since that is the weight CARRY mode on the Excursion receiver (i.e. non-WD mode).

I have NEVER used anything like either of these before...

Joe.

The first style i'm not so sure about. I'd like to hear from someone who's used it. The cross ones are more what i was thinking, similar to the bicycle rack i have now. I'm concerned about the weight limits though. The bike is roughly 500lbs, and i'm 150lbs, combine 650lbs. Naturally, I'd like to ride the bike on, running it up there seems like it might be difficult alone, though so does riding it now that I think about it. I'm gonna have to check into this more.

Thanks for the links though. Maybe i'll give them a call and see what they can tell me.

FWIW...your receiver would not break while loading if you were able to ride it up there (seems scary to me though)....the 500# weight CARRY limit is a static limit that easily gets exceeded when rolling down the road in a DYNAMIC sense when you hit bumps...if you only had 500#'s to start...so 650#'s for loading purposes would not concern me in the least...heck I drop 1200#'s on my receiver until I get the WD cranked up...never had an issue...plus how could you not load a heavy tongue trailer without dropping most of the weight on the receiver until you apply WD?...you have to be able to latch the tongue...

So if you were talking 500# max after all loaded up (don't forget to add the weight of the rack into this equation)...your receiver is up to that task per the mfg rating...

I've carried 4 dead deer on the back of my rack before...thankfully they were all medium to medium large does and no large bucks...weight was right at 500#'s...no issues...

Good luck,
Joe.

I'm not worried about the reciever at all, i'm worried about the rack, it already seems iffy on back and forth stability, the bike rack i have now twisted something terrible when I had a 300lb block of ice on it. Last thing I need to do is drop my bike off the back of my truck while driving down the road. I'm not entirely convinced they can be made sturdy enough to handle the back and forth weight, but i'm only basing that off my block of ice incident.

I carry bicycles on the rear of my TT...not near the weight you are talking but much more movement due to the wiggle of the rear of the TT as we travel down the road.

What I have taken to doing is securing the rack to the hitch thru TWO ratchet straps around the receiver and to the rack...doing one side first and then the other to really secure the rack to the TT and eliminate much of the wobble inherent in the 2" receiver box play to rack interface if you will...

I'm sure doing that with your rack would really cut down on the wobble you speak of.

There are also bolts that attach to the sides of the receiver bar and you use a wrench to apply pressure to the side of the bar...which effectively does the same thing my straps do...
