02 F350 lariat I shut it off and then an hour later someone told me I left my lights on, which I thought was weird because it has the auotmatic lights. So I went out to check and I opened the door and all I could smell was the start of an electrical fire. I couldnt find and hot fuses or wires. Anyone ever have something like this happen. The reverse lights are stuck on to.
I would think the headlight switch, but the backup lights shouldn't be in the headlight switch. GEM would be probable, or the wiring in the column perhaps.
unplug the batteries. check the rear of the fuse panel. remove the steering column shrouds and check from the shifter as far as you can go, to the fire wall at least. dont stop untill you find the problem.
if you cant find it then pull the fuses and to a continuity check on all the fuses load side and see what circuits are shorted. that may point you in the right direcrion. dont forget the panel under the hood and the relays as well.
good luck.
Well I droped it off at the shop today so hopefully they will figure it out tommorow. I should of left the battery hooked up and watch it go up in flames. With my luck it would of just melted a few wires.
Well I just called te shop and they said they think its the fuse panel and they need to tear it apart to check if theres any water intrusion or anything.
So they replaced the fuse panel and a wiring harness. 700 bucks later. I kept the old fuse panel in case I get sick of the truck Ill switch it back and watch it go up in flames. I think this is my last ford.
did they explain to you what caused the fuse panel to melt? this is not a common or even a once and a while problem. there had to be a high load to get the plastic to melt.
i dont know about the explores, but i do know that there hasnt been any issue with the superdutys.
do you have any aftermarket stuff that may have got to hot. im always more interested in why it happened as opposed to what happened. if you see the back of the panel you should be able to see what happened, at least the location.
