I've searched the forum for this issue but haven't seen anything quite the same, so I'll post.
1. This is the Mach stereo system with the cassette player in the head unit and the 6 cd changer in the console.
2. FWIW, the stereo has always been very warm to hot to the touch. Definitely has not seemed normal.
3. Recently, the sound suddenly went south. It sounds like the lows in the rear are still coming through, but all highs are gone and the fronts are barely audible.
4. When the stereo has been off for a long time, it sounds normal for about 1 song, and then the highs are gone again.
I am not sure about the 99 but in 98 the head unit was the same whether is it was the premium sound or the mach. The differences were in the amps and speakers as well as including a sub. If one out of a 98 would work I have one to get rid of. I suspect it a problem with the amp for all the speakers but the sub (it has its own amp) and not the head unit. I have one of these also.

I thought I read that the amp for the majority of speakers was located within the head unit. Where is it located?
Now, even with the stereo turned off, there's a "pop" that I hear shortly after turning the key on. Def seems like a possible issue within the amp.
Is a kit required to remove the stereo, or can something universal be used in those 4 holes to remove it?
There are tools available from Radio Shack etc. to do this. This might be the best way to get the correct tool instead of trying to find the correct size wire and get the notches into it just right. Otherwise check with anybody you know that might have worked with after market stuff as some of them at least used to use the same thing.
I have the same unit I think. They do get very hot. Mine get's amazingly hot to the touch. I use a cassette adapter for the XM radio and when I pop it out it's is blazing...has been the same for five years.
The amp for all speakers but the sub is behind the dash in front of the console.
I've pulled the console out. How much more of the dash do I need to remove to get to the amp. I might need to have my prescription checked, but I don't see it just yet.
