4 wheel drive issues

4 wheel drive issues
I purchased a 2005 F-150 (31,000 miles) about 3 months ago from a small private dealer.
Recently the 4 wheel drive has gone out and makes squeeling, metal to metal noises when I try to engage into 4 high. It made a load "clunk" noise when I tried to engage and since has made the noise and the 4 wheel drive does not engage now. I did some research and found the front left hub assembly was replaced in Jan 2008 at a dealership in Illinois (I live in Iowa). The warranty expired in June of 2008 so I am screwed as far as that goes.
I haven't had the issue diagnosed yet but, it is that common for the hub assemblies to go out like this? I am seeing a lot of people having issues like this and it really pisses me off.
I'm not a rah-rah die hard Ford guy, I seem to bounce back and forth from Chevy to Ford trucks (ranger then a short box chevy, then a bronco, then a silverado, now an f-150)... Convince me why I should stay with a Ford after something like this happening.
Thanks for your input
