I pulled a 9,500# load Saturday for the first time.
At average speed of 50mph, periodically heard a noise sounding like the radiator fan kicking on. The sound would go off-on-off sometimes for just a few second cycles, other times it would stay "on" for a minute or so.
Is it just the cooling fan?
If so, why would it "fast-cycle", and not stay on longer?
If not, what was it?
The cycling makes it sound like the AC compressor. The AC is active during AC (duh) and when you use the defroster (to dry the air a bit). The engine coolant fan should have a thermostatic clutch of some kind. If the air temps were low, I could see where the clutch would lock and unlock as it cooled off.
It sounds like the cooling fan for the radiator. With the weather temps being lower this time of year, it shouldn't be kicking in unless you are hauling a heavy load and really heating up the engine. I would first check coolant levels to make sure you aren't low.
