Please help - 4wd not working.

Was trying to drive wife's 91 Explorer up driveway in the snow tonite, and made several clunking noises then no front drive. It has made this noise while in 4 hi or low several times over the last week - have needed it to get around in the 2 ft of snow we got. It feels like it's coming from the front end, but not positive. I've been very easy on it - has a lot of miles and can't afford to replace it right now. Seems to be fine in 2 wheel drive, so we can use it, but is a problem now.

I need ideas on what I can check. Spindles and bearings were recently replaced by the local dealer - so that's all good. Was wondering if might be auto lock hub possibly, or any suggestions?!

Thanks for your help!

Rich

These autohubs will not work if packed with grease (especialy when cold), they need to be flushed and lubricated with a light coat of light grease and a tablespoon of ATF..

Cool - I'll give that a try! Would the hubs trying to engage - or partially engaging - cause the clunking sound/feel?

Thanks for the help!

Yes, that is the cam trying to engage against the packed grease. Cannot compress solids.
