Problem w/charging system- 91 ford e250 300 six, I think it has an ammeter, not light, guage that reads charge or discharge- problem started when battery went dead while driving, replaced alternator and regulator, battery tested OK, started up and no charge, full fielded alternator and charged @ max, I think this is a problem with excite wire that goes to S terminal from regulator, anyway is it possible to abandon this wire and run a new one from a switched circuit "on when key is on" and do I need a resister ? any help will be appreciated, Thanks

Are you sure it's not charging? Have you hooked a VOLT meter to the battery and verified that you're not getting 14.4 volts? The ammeters tend to fail and not show a charge. If you're going by that alone you need to check into it further before assuming it's not charging. I've owned several from '83 to '89 and I think TWO of them had working ammeters. That was it.

Check our change the ground straps, both the batt to body and engine to body, they tend to corrode and fail with time, causing charging problems.
