I have 2000 F350 Crew Cab long box 4x4 w/ 362K miles on it - auto and I tow 12.5K almost all the time ( goose neck trailers ). I'm having a hard start problem cold. Cranks great, pours out lots of black smoke but won't always start, when it does I usually have a dead cylinder or two for awhile. If the truck is plugged in - starts no problem, usually runs smooth. Have had to plug in below about 20 degrees F. This has been in addition to chasing a couple of leaks on top of the engine. One was fuel - found almost plugged filter, fuel was leaking around a gasket on the bowl, new filter and gasket and front of galley is dry. The other is an oil leak that is soaking the back of the galley and runs down the back of the engine - haven't isolated the source yet, since the hard starting has been the main issue, I've tried dye but without any luck. Anybody had the hard start with black smoke? any suggestions? Thanks
Sorry - it is a 7.3 L Diesel.
Glow plugs are on the list / its the black smoke when it won't start that's a little baffling. I'm leaning toward intake leak or a failing fuel pump but it runs like a top when plugged in (block heater) which would indicate check out the glow plug circuit, but bad glow plugs should be white smoke and smell of unburnt fuel........unless maybe its the relay which seems to be working but could warrant further testing. I see a lot of posts on glow plug problems, all with white smoke which makes this sound like a different issue.
good point on the smoke color. you might be on to something with the fueling system, but isn't it odd to have an over fueling condition? most people looking for power add bigger injectors for that.
