im replacing the head gaskets on my 74 360 and was wondering whan i get the heads of what do i look at to reasure everthing is ok i dont have the money to send them to the machine shop right now or i would any tips would be greatly apprecited

the truck was givin to me and has leaks all over the place he told me he replaced the head gaskets sometime back i can see its leaking in the back of the engine close to the fire wall at the head.when i asked him about it he said he had replaced the gaskets but did not re tourq them i am asuming that is one of the problems.

Dude i had the same problem, mine was due to warped heads. Make sure you check the gaskets when you get them off, you'll be able to see leaks they will show up as discolored markings on the gaskets. If you follow the re-torquing procedure (it is a stepped procedure for torquing the heads increasing in torque each sequence) I don't believe it is necessary to re-torque them, but checking is always good. Only advice I can give you is watch out for the dipstick tube when putting on them heavy heads, I had to do it 3 times because I scored the gasket when I kept getting caught on that tube. Also you will most likely need to get them rebuilt due to bad valve seats, I know mine were fresh heads and when I got the truck 30k later they were shot and needed to be done again. I also used copper coat on the block to help seal the gaskets (machine shop said not to but i got tired of taking it back apart due to leaks!) Good luck and eat your Wheaties!

the guy that did the work had never done the job before so im hopeing that its some thing easy like that he never really used the truck much except to go to the dump and stuff around his place so my fingers aer crossed its a easy fix
