If it was white/gray smoke it most likely is normal. If black, that's another story.
Your truck has 46000 miles so it must be a job #1 truck like mine.
There is a TSB 08-25-7, issued 10 December 2008,for 6.4L PSD trucks built prior to 8/2/2007 and a TSB 08-25-8 for trucks built between 8/3/2007 and 1/2/2008 in which the Power Control Module (PCM), Transmission Control Module (TCM), and Instrument Cluster (IC) are reprogrammed. There are nine calibration updates performed. The number 8 item is the enhancements for vehicles that exhibit white smoke during DPF regeneration at ambient temperatures below 55F (13C).
The white smoke is unburnt diesel fuel. I have never had the white smoke problem since new, but I have been aggressive in getting reflash updates as the occur.
I went into the dealer today...... they did the update to my truck..........They told me it is normal..... and the new update should reduce the smoke...... but like I told the dealer it never did it before..... I bought the truck in Sept of 07...... they said the temp must have been right...........?
Machinator........ this is the only issue I have with this truck......... I go to ford for all my service...... I know it is a little more money but when I invest the money I have it is worth it to me.......... I change oil about 5000 - 7000 miles....... and fuel filters ever other oil change..........
