Lost Transmission...

Lost Transmission...
Well today on our way out of town we got 50 kilometers out and it sounded like we were on rough road or wash board then that was it!
The transmissin slipped out of gear.
I pulled over and no gears worked,tried 4x4,4 hi,4 lo,2 wheel,reverse nothing at all.
There was no Transmission fluid spilling out over anything or on the undercarriage.
I used my cell and called a Towtruck and its outside at home now.
Driving my 1994 F250 4x4 Turbo Diesel with Automatic Transmission.
Any ideas on where to start??

Also I should note when I tried it the few times,truck running,and tried all the gears ,when I did goto put it into PARK it was grinding very little but it was there.
Moving them into gear was smooth like normal,only time it was grinding was into PARK.
