The only way I can see it running backwards is if the pull-start rope is spinning it in the wrong direction. I imagine it'd be tough, but any chance of bump-starting the sled?
Good morning everyone! Jay, not trying to be dumb here, but are you guys pullingthe cord hard enough? Because Iremember in my model airplane days, a lot of times if I hand started a 2 cycle nitro engine, it would kick back and run backwards for a little. Don't know if you can get the same reaction from a bigger 2 cycle though
When you pull the starter rope it will violently rip the handle right out of your hand on most pulls. We got it started again on Sunday, it idled good. Clutch did not want to engage well though. Put it outside to run a bit and give her a little more juice...and it moves backwards!!!!! The engine is actually spinning the wrong direction.
?
Check the flywheel key, something is making it fire a little out of time
A carbon buildup could also be an issue
Does it have a distributer?

As you slowly pull the rope it turns the motor the right direction but on a regular pull you can literally see the primary clutch change directions. And once running the fan is blowing air out instead of pulling it through the shroud and across the engine( It is fan cooled)

Definitely pulling hard enough. Although, it is suprising how cautious you are after it rips the handle out of you hand a few times!

No distributor. A magneto. We were kind of leaning toward the flywheel key thing also. Just rebuilt so no carbon issues yet.
Oh, and Brendan. I am not sure if you can bump start a sled. Never seen it done anyway. I think the track might not grip well enough? Actually, I do not think the clutches would engage enough for that. It will start just not easily.

Technically, everything is supposed to be in a fixed position!
I think though that things have moved. lol We will work on this either tonight or New Years day. I will keep you posted.
I have an odd scenario for any two stroke engine geniuses out there. I have been helping a buddy fix up an 87 Yamaha Phazer snowmobile. We have been having some odd starting issues. Well, we had it running ok last spring for about 40 miles before it decided to run like crap again.

Sorry about the long post. I have not had a chance to look at it since. we decided to just drink and watch the Vikings almost lose the the Giants second string.
WE are going to try switching the spark plug wires around but the one will not reach I am told. I plan to look at this closer tonight maybe. Any thoughts?
when it "violently rips the handle rite out of your hand", it is backfiring, and starting in reverse rotation. common occurrence for a 2 stroke. it sounds like the timing is off a bit.
i used to love the old 2 stroke detroit diesels. it was very easy to get them running backwards., then start grabbing gears
Jay, still here hehe, I was just cruising around you-tube a bit. Everynow and then I do a search for USMC or IED, and I do the best I can to hurt the feelings of those who talk chit about the guys getting shot at or blown up. I swear some of these *** clown do nothing but smoke weed in mom's basement 'cause they flunked outta the local liberal community college, and spend all day on line haitng those they could never be....
OK, just venting a bit, I'll be better in a few breaths....
Tom, how hard would it be to rebuild an old Jimmy 6-71 or similar? I've always thought it would be badass to have a built 2 stroke roaring under an old Ranger, with twin 6" stack throwin' flame!
