I just got a 95 f350 with a 460 it has 308k miles on it. ran good and had power. but now when I was diving for a couple of miles and let off the gas to slow down it smoked so bad it inculfed the truck but when I got back on it it cleared up.
I checked to breather and half of it was coated in oil, put in a new pcv valve and played with timing now it somkes so bad I cant breathe and can't see the truck even at idle. I havn't been down the road yet kinda scared too.
is it time for a new motor? all I want to do with the truck is pull my trailer so I don't want to spend a lot of money on it
Sounds like an overhaul to me. The rings (probably something else too) might have just had their last mile of service. Hope you can find a engine that is not too expensive or a rebuilder that isn't too expensive either & dependable. Good luck.
Do a compression test and/or leakdown test to see what condition the internals are in. I am replacing my '77 460 with a rebuilt long block from a local shop for $1899.00 with an RV cam already installed and a 7 year/ 70k warranty.
