I am looking for improved braking on Ford E150 van, 15 " wheels, mainly for improvements for towing in hot weather. Has anyone tried the Powerslot rotors? Any other recommendations? What type/brand pads?
Thanks,
pr '92 E150, 5.0L, 27 ft Jayco travel trailer
Got the cross drilled rotors on the front of a 4x4 F-150, they do stay much, much cooler when hammerin' on the pedal down a few of the steeper hills. Don't seem to be wearing at all and have much better wet braking, which is why I have them. I think you can buy them now, however, I had the local machine/race shop drill and dress mine on new rotors, cost just over $100 with new rotors. Nothing done to the rear though other than the best shoes I could find.
Performance Friction Carbon-metallic "Z" pads or Hawk Brake "GT+" are the best street pads you're going to find. Neither are cheap and neither is easy on the rotors, but they do stop. FWIW, the techs fron Hawk do not recommend cross drilled rotors, they do recommend slots though with 3-4 being the preferred number. In this case more does not seem to be better
I got a pair of powerstop cross drilled rotors and carbon metalic pads for my Bronco. I havn't fitted them yet but the rotors were $79 each and the pad kit was $40 and included new pins and stuff.I got them from Summit Racing.
After lifting a 1989 F150 and installing 33" tires, the factory rotors soon warped. I installed new OEM rotors from NAPA and pads from Auto Zone (carbon metallic). These rotors soon warped as well. The carbon metallic pads, I didn't really approve of. They felt very rough when braking, however they did stop well. "Raybestos" has a product line called "Brute Stop" pads and rotors. I installed them. The rotors are slotted and drilled. They stop well, are smooth and after 30000 miles they still have approx 1/2 of their pad material remaining. Most important the rotors have not warped in 30000 miles! The OEM's would warp after a few thousand. I have heard people complain that the "Raybestos" pads squeel. I have not experienced this. Perhaps because I used the "anti squeel" compound on the backs of the pads. If interested "Pep Boys" can special order these. They are expensive though, I believe the rotors were over $200/pair three years ago. Pad prices were in line with the rest of the competition. In my opinion a small price for reliable braking.
