My gauge (stock) hit the hot mark today, so I pulled over and all seemed well but I could hear the radiator make a noise. I pulled the cap, and it was full, put some water in the overflow and took off and all was well. This seems to happen every once in a while. I've also notice the water pump seem to possibly be making a noise. I was going to change it out along with the thermostat probably soon. Any other ideas?
You need to install a mechanical gauge to find out what's really going on. There is ample information in this forum alone, a search for "mechanical gauges" should bring some of it up. The reason we take this step first is because we need to work with actual numbers and trends to get a proper diagnosis. Measure first, spend money later.
If you find yourself having to add coolant from time to time, the motor is either burning it or leaking it. Spend some time searching for leaks, and sometimes it helps degreasing the motor completely so you can get a fresh look at new leaks. If, after some time, you can't find anything then it's time to see if it's burning it - compression test, leakdown test, looking for bubbles in the cooling system or water in the oil, etc.
