Engine problems (for a friend)

Alright got all the information I could remember here.

My buddy has a 01 powerstroke like mine it has 80,000 miles on it. Yesterday he called me saying it wouldn't start, says that it cranks like hell but just won't fire and he is getting white smoke out the back. I am guessing GPR? Am I wrong. Well he calls back and says he got it to start by holding his foot all the way down on the throttle and cranking for about 30 seconds. But he says that it is loping really bad but will idle. He also said that he filled up on Christmas eve with fuel but didn't put in the DK like usual but it wasn't that cold probably got down to 35 or so.

Well last night he got it to idle out like normal so decided to take it for a drive and didn't make it far the truck just started loping really bad kind of like a dirty fuel filter so he changed that out and it started up long enough to get it into his garage and now he says that about 5 minutes after getting it in the garage he has about a gallon and a half of oil on the ground. I am lost at this point hope this is enough info. Thanks guys.

My first guess was a loose wiring harness under a valve cover but that wouldn't explain the oil on the ground. Maybe two seperate problems?

I also thought two problems, the first sounds like mine with a bad ICP or IPS what ever that sensor on left head
But oil on ground was different

How much oil does it take to get it full again? He may have had a small leak for a while, and his running issues could just be related to the truck being low on oil. Sounds like an o-ring finally gave away, or he had that much oil in the valley and drove the truck up just the right incline to dump the oil from the top.

Have him grab a flashlight and look at the top of the motor for signs of pooling oil. Clean things up, re-fill the oil, then try to find out where the leak is coming from. HPOP end plug, HPO lines, turbo pedestal o-rings, ebpv actuator rod are possibilities.
