ABS problem
Merry Christmas, all. I have 150,000 miles on my 2000 4WD 5.4 X. The ABS light came on and the ABS quit working. Heres the strange part. Periodically the light will go off and when it does, just as the X comes to a stop (dry pavement), there is a violent pumping action (WAY worse than standard ABS action) and the brakes disengage. I quickly release the pedal and then re-apply the brakes and stop. This will happen through a max of 2 or 3 full stops, then the light comes back on and we're back to standard brakes with no ABS. When this happens, I'm almost stopped and I know to anticipate it because the ABS light is off, so it hasn't caused an accident, but I would like to fix it and have ABS again. Any suggestions?

Since the problem is in the ABS system it should store a code in the computer. Run it by Autozone and have them to run a test on it for free and it should bring up the codes to tell your whats wrong. They may very well have the part in stock and information on how to fix your problem.

The VSS sensor on the top of the rear end is what NAPA calls the ABS sensor. You need to look at that too, make sure the connector is good, the sensor is cheap. This is some place to look. Good luck.

I have this exact problem on my 98 Expedition and have a thread in there on this too. The reply was to change the speed sensor on the top of the rear. I got this sensor at Autozone and changed but the light came back the next day. I just picked up a sensor from the dealer ($27 in NJ) and swapped out with battery disconnected. Drove for a day and now the light is back on? I doubt two speed sensors were purchased bad. Anyone have any other suggestions?
