My son has a 2003 Ford Ranger 4X4. It has low miles and is in really good shape. The other day it was an icy glaze when he drove it home and parked it in the garage, and he had it in 4 wheel drive. I think he disengaged it at the last minute, but anyway, this AM he tried to back it out of the garage and the rear wheels didn't want to turn, it was like they were locked up. I let him take my car to work today cause once he discovered this he didn't have time to check into this further. What does he need to do next when he gets home later to be able to back it out and make it perform normally again? By the way, the switch for the 4x4 is the electronic type on the dash. Hopefully it's something simple.
thank you....
Doesn't sound like a 4x4 thing but a parking brake or ABS issue. A hair dryer on the rear drum might help. Or jam the brake pedal a few times. Is it a stick or A/T?
It's a stick. The parking brake is off, so it's not that. Also, it's not so cold here today as it's been, we're in Ohio, and it's supposed to be near 70 tomorrow.
mines done that twice in the last week, once when i had the parking brake on and once when it wasnt on, its deff a rear brake issue i think it might be with the cable freezing up if using the p barke and if not idk maybe just ice in the drums
You must be right bluedevil, by the time he got home, he simply started it up, and backed it right out of the garage, no further problems. So it had to be just frozen up. Thanks for the replys though.
My ranger freezes to the ground all of the time and I've had just the wheels freeze up. I rev it up and pop the clutch. If that doesn't work, I'll engage the 4wd and push the locked wheels back and fourths untill they break loose. I don't baby it, this is my 7th ranger I know there tough trucks. I have not failed to get them unlocked yet. My 07 mustang gt I had also frooze up in the garage and I poped it loose as well. I don't take no for an answer. This is from a freezing condition. not mechanical, if yours is mechanical, thats a different story.
