engine surging

I have a 98 Ranger with a 5.0 in it, it has been running fine for about a year the all of a sudden it started surging, hard to explain but it will pick up and run normal then die down and repeat, the only code I get is P0446 evap sys valve somthin or other, would a problem with the evap system cause this? It might have been a coincidence but I removed the gas cap just 'cause I was guessing at that point and the truck started running right, but know I don't trust it, it will come back I have done it twice now and it will go away for a while, by the way the evap system that I am using was in the truck originally and it was a 3.0,,,,thanks for listening,,,Neil

That's not a ranger, it's a F150.

umm jeez thanks for telling me my truck that has Ranger badges on the fenders is an F150,,,I put a 5.0 in my 3.0 98 RANGER XLT

Try replacing the gas cap? & make sure it's vented. Probably a bad hose though. Vacuum leak somewhere, not necessarily in the evap system. I don't believe the can should be significantly different from engine to engine on these Fords, but I could be mistaken. Might make more difference from gen to gen though. What was the 5.0L from?

Is your 5.0 carbureted or Fuel injection? If it's FI, which computer are you using?

I'd guess that the evaporative emission vacuum line is connected wrong. Try disconnecting it at the engine.
