I bought my truck in July of 07... its an 06 F-350 6.0 and it had 30k on it. Its ran nothing but great from the time I bought it until about 2 months ago and when 50k miles rolled around... I put an exhaust (5 inch mbrp) on it and AFE intake about 2 months after I bought it and like I said not a single issue until 2 months ago. Now I have 53k miles... Since then I have had the EGR cooler replaced, the EGR itself, the dealer said it needed to be reflashed also... Now after the last reflash my check engine light stays on... the dealer says its because the exhaust allows so much air through that it makes the computer think the EGR has failed? Now I never had that problem until this last reflash... Also... I notice the turbo makes a very loud somewhat of a thumping noise on decel... This again never happened before all these things were replaced... Now they were all done under warranty but is the reason for the check engine light the dealer is giving me legit? Or is something else going on/is there a way to solve this? I appreciate the help guys... Me and the dealer are both out of ideas...
It is possible that the exhaust is too big and causing problems. My truck smokes at lights and puffs a hint of smoke at takeoff due to the turbo not reading enough backpressure because of my MBRP 5" turbo back causing the egr valve to flow off idle which causes a very small overfuel situation until the turbo can clean it up on take off.
It used to blow a good amount of soot off idle like you said and at WOT... but after this reflash it doesn't... Yes I have looked at the code and the second time it threw the code they replaced the EGR again even though they said it passed the test and about 2 hours later of driving the light came on again... It kind of comes on and goes off at will... Any idea on the turbo noise?
Maybe pull the intake pipe off and have a look at the turbo inlet. See if there is any wear or dusting on the vanes. Maybe some sticking of the actuator. Just a guess but if it were me I'd look at the source of the noise.
I am thinking you should maybe put your stock intake and airfilter back on,,,It's been said that the stock system is good up to about 500 hp,,and that theres a chance of Dusting the Turbo with aftermark filter's and such,as they dont filter as well. My Buddy has a Dodge cummins,,and he had a K&N filter on it,,approx 30 k miles later he could see a dirt buildup (dusted)on his turbo veins,,he promptly re-installed his stock type filter setup,,and been fine since. Maybe a good place to start.
