IMO, I personally prefer fishers, over meyer. I do not like the way a meyer plow's trip works. On the fishers, only the cutting edge trips, and you only lose just a little bit, on a meyer, you lose your whole load. Im not really sure how to make that sound appropriate, so that will have to do. Those are the only two plows, I have PERSONAL experience with. Not sure about the other brands.

I think the "Best plow" for each individual person will depend on if you have a good local dealer and can readily get parts for it in an emergency.

I've ran Western straight blades on my last two trucks that I plowed with. Real big Western dealer close by. Never had any issues.

I started looking for a plow for my 07 F-350 this fall and found out one of my customers is a Boss and Western dealer to I talked with them and ended up getting a 9'2" Boss Power-V XT installed.
Love the plow, already plowed 9 different days with it.....max was 14hrs of plowing in one day so far.

The most important thing to consider when buying a plow is dealer support. At the end of the day they all get the job done but the dealer who gets you back out quickly when something fails is the key. Me personally, I used Fishers when I plowed. But any name brand like Western, Diamond (Myers trip edge version) Curtis, and so on will do.

plows

Well, for the most part I will agree with what has been said do far. Dealer support is a big issue, especially when the crap (snow) is hitting the fan (ground). Personally I have run westerns and Boss. The Western was decent, but typical issues with solenoids. Luckily, there is a local Western dealer that I was used to dealing with. Also wasn't tremendously happy with the lack of versatility of the straight blade. My friend's business began running Boss V's a few years back, so I started looking into these, and tested theirs out a bit. When I purchased my 06 SD, I went with the Boss V rather than the Western. Between myself and business, we have 4 Boss V's, 2 Westerns, and a Fisher. I must say I will never go back. The Boss V is tremendously versatile for plowing during the day (with traffic in lots), as well as stacking snow (we get can get upwards of 200" in a bad year). We all carry repair kits "just in case", and about the only problem we have encountered is an occasional broken return spring, which is an easy fix. I must also say, the 30-second on/off is FANTASTIC!!!!

Either way you go.....do your research, and know your plow and its limitations, and buy the best one for the type of work you will do. Good Luck!

I have had my 9' Fisher MM going on 10 years already,,,man time flys by,,,It has been a great Plow,,,I kinda like the Fisher mounting system the best,,,I have not looked at all of them,,,I have seen the Western, Meyers, Curtis,,,,Fisher is a simple Ramp/wedge type design, and 2 pins,,,for hooking up to the truck,,and a small mount stays on the truck,,,Others have links to add,,4 pins,,a hydraulic type foot that raises and lower's,,contraptions that fail or you loose them.

Think my next plow will be a 9' Fisher X Blade(stainless),,or similar!

It also depends on what you're plowing. I ran a curtis the past 4 years plowing state highways with my f250. The curtis sno-pro 3000 just wasn't heavy duty enough for that type of plowing and needed to be replaced after 2 years. Another truck I ran has a Boss and it works fine and is heavy duty but I didn't use that one much. Right now my new truck has a fisher and I like it the best.

The fisher trip mechanism is very smooth and predictable. The curtis would almost stop the truck dead when it caught something.

The curtis is by far the easiest to mount to the truck. I really miss the ease of attaching the curtis. The fisher is a pain in the *** if you're even a little bit misaligned. The fisher is a minute-unmount, not a minute mount unless you have a perfectly flat and level paved driveway to store the plow.

Plowing highways the curtis was the best as far as cutting edge longevity however the curtis edge sucked so i redrilled to accept the fisher edges. The curtis would last me 4 or 5 storms on one edge. The fisher lasts 3 or 4. I think this was because the curtis was lighter weight (less heavy duty).

The curtis wiring was a piece of crap, however I had the old single plug harness, they've updated since and I'm not sure if it's any better. I'd have to get out and wiggle the plug every couple hours as the plow stopped functioning correctly. I kept the plug perfectly clean and greased too so that wasn't the problem. The fisher plug setup is very nice, they are very tight fitting and I haven't had a single issue yet with the wiring.

The lights on the new fisher are very nice, the curtis lights sucked.

The hydraulics and wiring for the curtis are hidden underneath the truck in the frame of the plow making it very difficult to inspect. If something goes wrong more than likely you're going to have to drop the plow to even begin to check on things. The fisher hydraulics are right on the front of the frame and easily inspectable while walking by.

That's about all I can think of right now. Hope it was a bit helpful!

u beat me to it. my fisher MM is exactly 10 years old now also, but just about done. could use a few welds-missing two springs after last sundays storm-and i've repainted it two years ago but its starting to show through "rust" again.
BUT, for the past 10 years its been used on "every" storm. Thats alot of hours and alot of $$$. it "has been a great plow".
now as far a dealers go, I have the fisher HD MM electric/hydraulic and its pretty basic for repairs and maintenance. u can see everything. i've done it all my self. you can get the service manual online and "alot" of automotive part shops "around here anyway" carry fisher plow parts, don't even need a dealer most of the time as long as you can get the parts.
goood luck!

I have mounted and worked on just about every plow on the market.
I use a fisher and the main reason is for the clean look after the plow is taken off.
I always thought fisher was built the best until blizzard came along but I still like the fisher mount set up better.

i use Meyers plows.
simply because my first plow was a Meyers, and i like to keep things interchangeable. and my original Meyers C-8 is now 36 years old, and still in good shape.

im running a western ultramount 8' 6" and i think its the nicest system out there. you drive up to it, it has tapered heads on it so it guides itself into the recievers, you flip two hooks back and connect your wires and your done. thats it. also it doesnt leave the pump and lights on your truck like the meyers will. its all contained to one system. self install was extremely easy, anyone can do it! ive got the proplus package with the backdrag edge. i got a steal on mine in virginia for 2400 used 3 times.
