hmm, dont you just love it when you have to put in new studs on a 4x4 front dana 44... well i dont, i can get down past the actual hub part then things get dicey and the lil' sprockets dont want to come out. Im pretty sure im using an internal hub system.. all i know for sure is its a front dana 44 front from a 79 bronco 400 with towing package (2 front shocks around the coil springs up front...) and its 5 lug, so if anyone knows any tricks on dealing with hub problems, please dont hesitate to share them.
From the top, remove the six allen head screws and remove the locking actuator. Next, remove the outer snap ring that is in a groove on the hub, this should allow you to remove the piece that the allen screws thread into, there may be a small phillips head screw to remove also, now the outer gear should come out. Once that is out, there should be a snap ring on the axle that is removed, this should allow you to remove the gear that rides on the axle with a washer and spring behind it. Then you will need your axle nut socket to remove the outer retainer, once out, there should be a washer with holes in it that has a keyway on the spindle shaft, pull this straight out. Remove the second retaining nut, this one sets bearing preload, and the bearing should come out and the hub/rotor can now be removed. I think this is the correct order except for the phillips head, can't remember without takin' mine apart! Everything goes back in the opposite and be careful when setting the bearing preload. Now is the time to repack the bearings, but you will need a new seal on the inside-got to get the old out to remove the inner bearing. Hope I remembered this right, soon time to do maint. on mine again! I'll know for sure after that! But this should be close and don't think I missed any parts that need to come out-maybe just a little different on the order.
