pfogle - yes, I've flushed the trans & had the pressures checked, new shift kit etc a couple of months ago when I felt it begin to slip in 2nd. It was good until last week, when the slipping in 2nd returned.
Considering this AOD trans has done 25 years unmodified, seen a 302 out & now an unknown number of years behind the current 351W (without any repairs according to the PO), it would probably see both me & the truck out if it was rebuilt.
I admit I've probably become AOD-shy. I like 'simple, overbuilt & long-lived' with vehicles & machinery, even though it doesn't usually give highest performance.
Also, I sometimes need to be able to hold in 2nd gear, & with the AOD you can only select 'L' - but if the truck's speed briefly drops below 25mph, it dives down into 1st. It's not a big deal but frustrating at the time.
My vote is for the c6 I have the aod in my 86 5.0 that I gave $2500 dollars for. I would swap it for a c6 any day. I also have a 86 350 with the 460 c6 combo and I like it much better. No tv cable to adjust and the c6 is bullet proof. My truck with the aod is constantly changing back and forth from 3rd to 4th any way so I just keep it in drive and forget the overdrive. The milage does suffer but you can buy alot of gas for $2500 dollars. I can rebuild a c6 for $600 dollars and go another 200 thousand miles. good luck in your choice.
yes I was quoteing $600 for the whole job. You could do it yourself for like $200 if you have the ability I suppose, depending on how much you change. touque converter, ect.
It's a little bit like a carb. If you don't know what's going on inside, you can make it through if it's a simple rebuild that replaces the normal parts, and you are very organized. If you have a special circumstance or problem that needs addressed, then you have to know more about how it all works.
The problem with a tranny is it's a lot of work to take it in and out several times if you make mistakes.
