Cigarette lighter
What is supposed to hold the cigarette lighter in the dash, mine just falls out, like there is something missing on the back side of the dash that keeps it in place. It was like this when I got it, I have looked behind the dash to see if there was something broken, but I see nothing. Is there a clip or something supposed to be there? Thanks
The lighter assembly or just the lighter itself?
The lighter by itself is just held in by friction - I find mine to be very tight.
The lighter assembly (part that holds the lighter) normally would have some type of pressure tabs or lock nut behind it. I've never looked in too much detail at our Super Duty trucks behind that part of the dash, but you may be missing plastic clips (broken off) or if they are metal they just may need to be bent out a little bit to hold it into the dash.
Someone else here should have a parts diagram and can maybe post it. I'm just speculating at this point.

The whole assembly falls out, I looked at it, and it has a plastic ring around the back of it, but it won't stay in, almost looks like there might be a ring that snaps on the back that is missing.
pic in catalog is worthless but sounds like maybe the mounting ring is missing. This is the info I got when I looked up the cig lighter.

I also was wondering about getting a plug that covers the bolt hole on my grab handle on my A pillar. I am missing one, they are gray. I found the part # on your site. I am going to get a list of all the small parts I need, and order them all at once. Thanks.
send vin so I can get right color for cover.

My '04 F250 was missing the **** and element (plug-in part). I picked up replacement from Ford this afternoon and the fit is loose. Seems like it will fall out when I hit the slightest bump. This is the part number they gave me.

Also, you have to hold the **** in to heat the element. The last time I used a lighter (still don't really need one - non-smoker) the **** stayed engaged until it was hot, then popped out. Is the way they still work? Just curious.

I think there is a flange like thing that held it in, but it probably broke.
Which keeps electrical flow, cig lighter or power point?
The lighter outlet uses spring steel forced against the sides with an indent. Same design that has been used for decades. You can gently pry the 1/16" slivers out so they hold better. As for the PP holding a lighter, no, it wasn't designed for that but you can buy one at any supply store and install it.
There are models that stay in until hot and pop out slightly. I don't like them, I have had them pop all the way out and roll under the seat, YIKES!

My problem is that the entire socket falls out of the dash, not just the lighter part. I don't use the lighter part anyway, I plug my radar detector into the outlet, and the whole thing falls out and hangs by the wires.

Just kidding, that wouldn't be a good idea.
