302 Swap

Im looking into buying a 90 ext. cab ranger. Has a 2.9, with a 5 spd. 4wd of course. It has 8 inches of lift and a set of 33's. I want to use it as a mud truck/weekend ride. I was wondering how much work it is to swap the 302 into it. I would be using a carb. intake. So basically what has to be done to get it into the truck. Will it bolt up to the stock 5 spd. Does anyone know what it would cost me to do it. I have a motor out of a 78 f100. I read a few posts on this topic on here and it appears that I will need headers, a rear sump oil pan, oil filter reloc. kit, different rad, motor mounts, and some mods to the heater box and firewall. How about the fan. Electric? Will the motor driven fan fit in btwn the rad? Thanks Adam

it would be much less work to put a 4.0 in, and you would have about the same h.p. and alot less weight. if youre set on a 302 V8, it can be done. if your truck hasnt been re-geared to compenste for the huge tires, you will want to consider that too. if the 2.9 still runs but is doggy, gearing could be the whole problem.

The 302 is a very common swap, james duff and advanced adapter make the conversion kits to make the swap easy. Advanced adapters also makes a conversion to put a T-5 into the ranger as the stock tranny isn't realy strong enough for a V-8. Cost would depend on your best deals on parts.
