i have been getting a wierd vibration while driving after hitting a bump my truck rides real rough like my tires are outa balance hit another and it goes away. more info bout it on "weird vibrations" thread. but i checked my driveline and the shaft goes from the transfer case to a u shaped bracket then in another pice from their to the diff. at that u shaped bracket i have at least a 1/4 inch of up and down play in it. i assume this is the carrier berring. could this be the explaination for the vibration. i need nore info if this is not normal how do i fix it
That's the carrier bearing. The rubber mount its in should have some play, not sure how much though. If it was bad, it would probably give you problems all the time though. Does it feel like the vibration is coming from the front or back? Can you feel it in the steering wheel (like its being moved back and forth)? Does it happen at a certain speed or all speed? Does locking the hubs in make any difference (just locked, not in 4wd)?
as before stated the rubber mount on the carrier bearing will have some play but bearing should be tight in the mount
Normally when the carrier bearing starts to go you will get a rumbling viberation while accelerating or decelerating

This bearing mount slack can be aggravated by a u-joint that is starting to 'tighen up' on you.
But, the vibration comes and goes with hitting a bump, which is the weird part. I had the tail pipe, on my 4" exhaust, get stuck on the spare tire when hitting a sharp bump. This caused a weird noise and vibration. Happened after going over a railroad track.

Correct. 1/2" play in the carrier rubber seems to be too much and a tight joint will cause vibration. There are the reasons I had my entire drive line replaced.
I am having a similiar issue since I lifted my truck and did wheels and tires. I thought it was the wheels and tires but I had them rebalanced and am heading more towards the u-joints or carrier bearing. I have a slight drop on the carrier bearing but have heard that the drop isn't exact and you have to play with it. They also used an angles rear block for my axle. Any help on how to "tune" it would be great.
