gas gauge help

just bought a 91 f150 and was told the rear tank doesnt work,dont know why,havnt had a chance to look but the gas gauge stays peaked way past the full mark and even when I hit the rear tank switch its dont move.any one have any ideas on what it could be or how to test something like that

The gas guage works on a ground circuit instead of power. If something in the circuit is grounded out then the guage will show at least higher or full all of the time. So you need to check where the wires are either shorted to each other or to the body with an ohm meter.

What about the sending unit cause my 91 the gauge for the most part reads empty on a full tank but if i run it empty or it feels like weird the guage will work. just throwing in what i think it might be.

If it reads empty but works sometimes either the tank mounting straps are loose (high probabilty) or the sender is messed up. If it never works then the float has a hole in it, the sender is bad, or the wire(s) are unhooked or cut.
The original post is the opposite. His tank reads full or higher than the amount of gas that's in the tank.
