There is no such thing as best, just best for your application. Do you need a lot of power with the ignition off, do you want a simple lead plate battery?
I am pretty happy with Exide Orbital right now, and I had good luck with Optima Yellow tops. Optima blue tops sucked for me.
I think my OEM motor craft is on the way out after only about 3.5 years. It was minus 5 though but she barely turned. I do not have allot of accessories or extra lights. I just want some good cold weather cranking and longevity.
I just replaced my factory original batteries with two more motorcrafts from my local ford dealer. My truck is an 02 so six years on a set of batteries is prurty darn good IMO. They charged me $135.00 each which is quite comparable to other brands in my area and they have a 3 year or 36 month free replacement and 100 month prorated replacement afterward. If I can get 6 more years of use from these then I think it was money well spent. The cold weather here in Canada is very hard on batteries, our currant temp. outside is minus 28c thats minus 20f for you guys in the USA. It`s been like this for almost a week now.
I replaced all my factory batteries after about four or five years on them and have put Interstate in all three of my vehicles now in the last year.
So far, so good. Started the two cars yesterday at -35C after only being plugged in for an hour...tons of juice to spare (normally they are plugged in on the block heaters longer but we went away for two days and I needed to switch the vehicles around, batteries had plenty of power but it's hard on the vehicles to start them at that temp when not plugged in).
My MC battery in the truck left me putting on my boost kit at -15C a month ago, so it got the last of the three Interstate batteries installed just in time for our current deep freeze. Time will tell if I am as happy with the Interstate as the MC original. I have found you can usually guarantee 4 to 5 years (60,000 miles or so) out of a factory MC battery. Some of the cheaper batteries are lucky to last two or three years.
I just got a megatron plus from my buddy for $105 out the door (cost +tax) I was getting slow cranking and figured I better replace it now before I get stuck. 5 years was a good run for the stock motorcraft.
The last two batteries I bought (Not for my SD) were Duralast batteries from Autozone. The one Duralast battery I have is around 4 years old and has been drained down to almost dead many many times and has always charged up and worked fine. I really like Interstate batteries also and they have a good rep.
I hate Sears/Diehard batteries, have had nothing but trouble with them and they don't last.
The stock battery in my 03 was only good for 3 yrs. I had put a NAPA batt. a few yrs. earlier in my wife's Durango and was happy so I put one in the 250. I used it to run a 1 1/2" water pump and inverter on the job and it is still going strong.
Exide makes one of the best batteries out there. That is straight from someone in the industry. He also said that for the money the Wal*Mart batteries are actually a good deal. You pay $90 and get 3-4 years, or spend $140 - $150 and get 6 years for a better brand. If you compute it down the Wal*Mart ones aren't bad.
Also, my dad has a Dura Last "Gold" in his Cadillac and it has an 8 year warranty and is still going strong after 6 years or so!!
